Care home chef Paul Wright has triumphed at the Care Home Chef of the Year regional finals in Stratford-upon-Avon, receiving a highly commended main course award for his expertly crafted dish.

The chef from Prospect House care home, Cheshire, took on the two-course challenge to impress judges with a main course of chicken ballotine with chorizo on a bed of butter beans and, to finish, a lemon and thyme cheesecake with a ginger crumb.

The former Gleneagles and Michelin Star chef created the winning dish within the award guidelines of producing a nutritionally balanced two-course meal in 90 minutes, suitable for service users in a care setting, costing no more than £2.25 per head for both courses.

Neel Radia, National Chair of the NACC, said: “Everyone who has competed in the competition are fine examples of care chefs up and down the country, who believe food is at the centre of quality care and are dedicated to making sure they deliver the very best.”

Paul Wright commented on his new gourmet role, saying: “I’ve worked in some of the best and most demanding restaurants in the UK but this competition was definitely a challenge and one I am very proud to have taken part in to demonstrate care home cooking can definitely be gourmet.”

Prospect House care and nursing home is a member of the National Association of Care Catering which is committed to raising the standards of care catering and championing the positive impact nutrition, hydration and mealtimes have on the physical and emotional health and wellbeing of the elderly and vulnerable in care settings.
