Sunrise of Hale Barns, an Altrincham care home providing personalised dementia care and assisted living, has launched a Silver Surfers Group with the aim of improving residents' digital literacy and tackling loneliness amongst older people in the area.

Sunrise of Hale Barns, an Altrincham care home providing personalised dementia care and assisted living, has launched a Silver Surfers Group with the aim of improving residents' digital literacy and tackling loneliness amongst older people in the area.

The care home is inviting members of the local community to attend their free and informal classes on IT basics, including iPad usage, laptops and smart phones, and guests will be able to enjoy complimentary refreshments.

The Silver Surfers Group will be held on the last Friday of every month at 2pm, and Sunrise of Hale Barns have organised for local computer repair company Mel’s Computer Care of Sale to run the sessions. Their expert team will also be on hand to answer any questions. The sessions will be jargon-free and adaptable to each attendee's prior knowledge.

This is part of Sunrise of Hale Barns' anti-loneliness campaign. In addition to this, the home will also be inviting guests to join residents for activities such as a monthly afternoon tea and entertainment - this will be for any local people who may be alone in their own homes, who want to come down and enjoy some company.

Sharon Parkes, Director of Community Relations at Sunrise of Hale Barns, said: “Sunrise of Hale Barns are proud to be hosting our Silver Surfers Group. We love to encourage residents to learn new skills and socialise with members of the local community. Everyone is really excited about this new initiative, as many of them can’t wait to be able to show their grandchildren what they can do using iPads and smartphones. We will be doing more activities to further expand on our anti-loneliness campaign in the future."
