ESSEX CARE HOME RESIDENTS ENJOY SUNNY SEASIDE RETREAT

Essex care home residents enjoy seaside retreat

Residents at RMBI Care Co. Home Prince Edward Duke of Kent Court, in Braintree, Essex, have recently enjoyed a nostalgic day trip to the seaside.

Accompanied by the Home’s Activities Coordinator, the residents were able to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, talk with the local fishermen and indulge in a traditional fish and chips lunch in Walton-on-the-Naze.

Reflecting on her day in nature, resident Olive said: “I love the seaside. Living in Southend, I always loved the beach but never got to fully enjoy it, as I was too much of a workaholic. I’m so happy I get to enjoy it now.”

Spending time at the beach can have many benefits for older people. Moderate exposure to sunlight helps our bodies make vitamin D, which helps boost the immune system. It also gives an opportunity to unwind by taking in the scenery and hearing the rhythmic sound of the waves. Residents with breathing difficulties may also feel more comfortable at the beach, as it’s easier for their lungs to absorb oxygen.

The benefits for mental health are also obvious. “These trips are wonderful reminders of the joy in life’s simple pleasures and the importance of shared moments,” said Activities Coordinator Sophie George. “It helps the residents bring back memories from their beach days when they were younger, which is fantastic for their mental health and wellbeing.”
