Care homes across UK Prepare to open doors for Care Home Open Day

Care providers across the UK are revving up for tomorrow’s Care Home Open Day, an event designed to promote the positive in the care sector.

Tomorrow will be the fourth year in a row the event has been held and will see thousands of providers open their doors to their local communities, to undertake a day of ‘celebration’ themed activities.

A statement on the Care Home Open Day website says:  “For far too long the care home sector has been marred by the negative press generated by a minority of badly run homes, and we’re determined to show people what the majority of care homes are really about.

We want the world to realise that care homes really can be inspiring places, full of unique, intelligent and charming characters, and run by special people that really do care.”

The event is designed for care homes to build lasting relationships with the local community and dispel negative connotations surrounding the sector.

Care UK care homes are preparing for tomorrow’s events which will be held in 106 of its 113 care homes across the country.

A cross-section of Care UK’s homes will be celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday, with street parties, royal tea parties, nominate a ‘Queen for the Day’ and screenings of the Coronation taking place.

Others will be hosting carnival parties in honour of the Rio 2016 Olympics, whilst some are choosing to host Punch and Judy shows, magicians, balloon modelling and face.

Speaking to Tomorrow’s Care, Andrew Knight, Managing Director for Care UK, said: “Care Home Open Day is all about connecting people and enriching the lives of residents through building on relationships with local people and community groups. This year we wanted to show our support and commitment for this initiative by making it our biggest and best contribution to Care Home Open Day yet.

“There is a huge amount of excitement building in our care homes as plans are finalised for the open days. For the first time ever, the vast majority of our homes are taking part.

"The Care UK teams have all been inspired and enthused, and we will be seeing a diverse programme of activities and attractions across the homes including the likes of belly dancers, barbecues, photo booths, archery and animal Olympics. Everyone is looking forward to getting behind Care Home Open Day and we cannot wait to open our doors to show thousands of people what their local care home has to offer”.

Speaking about the Anchor Trust's involvement in Care Home Open Day Mario Ambrosi, Anchor's Head of Policy and Communications, commented: "Our homes across the country are getting involved in Care Home Open Day. This is a wonderful initiative that helps the public to understand the care sector and the impact it has on communities, families and residents. It also showcases the incredible work of our colleagues."
