PM’S SOCIAL CARE PLEDGE WILL BE TOUGHER THAN BREXIT, WARNS CARE EXPERT

Following Boris Johnson’s first speech as Prime Minister, which included a pledge to improve the state of social care, experts in care and protection have voiced their concerns on his promises being achievable.

As part of his pledge, Mr Johnson said: “My job is to protect you or your parents or grandparents from the fear of having to sell your home to pay for the costs of care. And so, I am announcing now – on the steps of Downing Street – that we will fix the crisis in social care once and for all with a clear plan we have prepared to give every older person the dignity and security they deserve.”

Commenting on the pledge, Annabelle Vaughan, Head of the Care & Protection Group at law firm Coffin Mew, said: "I think this will be tougher to deliver than Brexit! Striving for high-quality social care that is affordable for both the country and the individual will be a tall order, particularly if he wants to retain the support of Tory voters, many of whom may need to pay more for social care. The Prime Minister will need to find financial resources that have previously eluded his predecessors.”
