Contemporary towers for the older generation get go-ahead

Brassington Avenue, a 240 unit development designed for the older generation in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham has won planning permission. The scheme is designed to deliver a new approach to retirement housing, conceived by specialist developer PegasusLife.

Designed by Glenn Howells Architects, the site will deliver five residential towers set around a central two-storey podium core. Each tower will be ‘rotated’ in response to views and infiltration of sunlight.

The scheme also features interlocking and dual aspect balconies and open spaces in a landscaped environment. The Garden Level on the first floor will house communal facilities, including a spa, swimming pool, gym, relaxation rooms, restaurants and dining areas.

Each home can adapt to the residents’ changing needs and space requirements, such as moveable partition walls – a key aspect of all PegasusLife properties.

Led by Camlins Landscape Architects, the landscape is a fundamental part of the development. With mature landscaping to the western edge and an area of wetlands providing sustainable drainage and planted banks, most apartments will enjoy garden views. Large trees will also be planted along the length of Brassington Avenue to create a green corridor for local wildlife.

In a press statement, the developers of the project said: “Brassington Avenue embodies a key principle; that everyone, irrespective of age, shares the aspiration to live in a beautifully designed, socially inclusive environment, supported by first class provisions and services.”
