CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO GET THOUSANDS SINGING FOR DEMENTIA

In support of Dementia Action Week, Home Instead Senior Care has pledged to get thousands of people singing through a campaign called ‘Songs to Remember’.

In support of Dementia Action Week, organised by Alzheimer’s Society from 21st – 27th May 2018, Home Instead Senior Care has pledged to get thousands of people singing through a campaign called ‘Songs to Remember’.

The award-winning home care company specialises in non-medical care of older people in their own homes and many of its caregivers receive proprietary dementia training which is accredited by City & Guilds.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the therapeutic benefits of music for people living with dementia. Research has shown that memories of old songs activate very specific areas of the brain, which seem to be particularly resistant to the damaging effects of the disease.
The International Longevity Centre – UK (ILC-UK), with support from The Utley Foundation, has created a Commission on Dementia and Music.

They are actively encouraging more to be done to promote the power of music to improve the lives of people with dementia and are supporting the Home Instead #SongsToRemember campaign.

Sally Bowell, ILC-UK Research, said: “We are delighted that Home Instead is drawing attention to the importance of singing and music for people living with dementia in such a fun and inclusive way. We know that music has such huge potential to provide a lifeline promoting social connection, restoring a sense of self and bringing joy, even during what can be challenging times.”

Home Instead is getting as many people as possible to join in and sing along. Staff and clients at their 190 offices across the country will be taking part, and will be posting pictures and videos of their efforts on social media using the hashtag #SongsToRemember.

Martin Jones, Managing Director at Home Instead Senior Care, said: “Our #SongsToRemember campaign is all about highlighting the benefits of music and singing for people living with dementia.

“We want to get at least 1,000 people singing as part of Dementia Action Week, and we hope people will get involved and use the hashtag to tell us about the impact music has on them.”

On Wednesday 23rd May, Home Instead will be holding a live Q&A on its Facebook page at 4pm – ‘Let’s talk about dementia’ for more information or to take part visit facebook.com/homeinsteaduk.
